Anthony Steel

I was born and raised in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. I went to Sydney Boy’s High, completed a Bachelor of Arts full time in regional NSW, then a Bachelor of Business by correspondence followed by a Bachelor of Laws part time at the University of Technology, Sydney whilst working full time as a university administrator.

I started my legal career working in paralegal roles for the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions, then the Australian Government Solicitor, then the Law Society.

In 2000 I worked for a year as an employed solicitor, then I took a year’s sabbatical from law to fulfil my long held ambition of teaching English in Japan. On resuming my legal career a year later, until 2008 I worked as an employed solicitor for a small Eastern Suburbs law practice. I then spent 2 years developing and launching the inaugural Family Law Duty Solicitor program at the Hunter Community Legal Centre in Newcastle. I then worked as an employed solicitor for the Penrith law practice Burston Cole and Associates until I opened Mid Mountains Legal in 2018.

I have extensive experience representing clients in numerous local courts and in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCA), including appearances in the Sydney, Parramatta, Newcastle, Dubbo and Brisbane Registries. I have also appeared in the District Court and in the Supreme Court of NSW and in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) in Sydney. I have appeared in Local courts including St James Local Court, the Downing Centre, Hornsby, Waverley, Burwood, North Sydney, Redfern, Lithgow, Katoomba, Tamworth and Walgett.

Often you need a lawyer at difficult times in your life. So much can be riding on the outcome of your matter. Commencing or becoming enmeshed in legal proceedings can be traumatic, time consuming, drawn out and prohibitively expensive.

I provide practical legal advice free of legal jargon, discussing your matter with you and applying my extensive experience to every aspect of your legal matter.

I understand that during this period you need someone who is readily available and focused on tirelessly working to achieve the best possible outcome for you. I fearlessly represent and protect your interests whilst compassionately supporting and guiding you along the paths taken by your legal matter. I take a goal-oriented approach, doing my utmost to resolve your legal problems as quickly and cost effectively as possible so you can get on with your life.

I explain the steps, what to expect, alternate strategies, and the potential costs and benefits of choosing different paths, to help you to make informed decisions. I listen to you. I am approachable, understanding and empathetic, aiming to dispel any confusion and uncertainty you may feel. My goal is to help you understand your current position, what comes next, and why.

I focus on the significant aspects of legal documents and explain in plain English the meaning, significance and effect of sometimes arcane and obscure, complex and confusing legal jargon.

I am thorough and work hard to help you to resolve your legal problem. Whilst remaining open to fair and reasonable settlement proposals, if negotiation and mediation results in a stalemate and compromise seems unattainable, I unhesitatingly enter into the fray. In negotiations and in litigation I am resilient, assertive, determined, persistent, strategic and relentless in pursuing your interests.

My involvement in the blue mountains community includes:

  • Committee member of the Blue Mountains Regional Law Society;
  • Volunteer  – the Blue Mountains Music Festival;
  • Volunteer – the Brook Community Theatre;
  • Committee member and volunteer – Friends of the Mechanics Institute at Lawson (FOTMIL)
  • Deputy Chairman – Blue Mountains City Council 355 Committee

I appreciate that it is difficult at the best of times to ask for time off work and that people you wish to appoint as your attorney or guardian may only be able to visit the blue mountains after hours, on weekends or on holidays. To facilitate your access to legal assistance, I am available for appointments outside business hours.

If you have or someone you know has a legal problem you think I can help you with, please contact me for a free telephone consultation or to arrange an appointment at a time that suits you.
