I was born and raised in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. I completed a Bachelor of Arts full time in regional NSW, followed by a Bachelor of Business by correspondence, culminating in a Bachelor of Laws part time at the University of Technology, Sydney whilst working full time in university administration.
I started my legal career working as a paralegal for the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions, followed by the Australian Government Solicitor, then the Law Society.
In 2001 I took a year’s sabbatical from being a solicitor to fulfil a long cherished ambition to teach English in Japan. On resuming my legal career in 2002 I worked as a solicitor for several Sydney law firms and launching the Family Law program of the Hunter Community Legal Centre in Newcastle before starting Mid Mountains Legal in 2018.
I have extensive experience representing clients in numerous local courts and in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, including in Sydney, Parramatta, Newcastle, Dubbo and Brisbane Registries. I have appeared in local courts in locations as diverse as the Downing Centre, Hornsby, Waverley, Burwood, North Sydney, Redfern, Lithgow, Tamworth and Walgett.
I provide practical legal advice free of jargon, personally attending to and discussing with you each stage of your legal matter.
Throughout the matter I keep in regular contact with you. I explain strategy and the potential costs and benefits of choosing to take different paths to help you to make informed decisions. My goal is that by the end of our phone call or appointment you understand where you stand, what should be done next and why.
Often when you need a lawyer it is a difficult time in your life. Getting enmeshed (willingly or not) in legal proceedings can be confusing, traumatic, time consuming and prohibitively expensive. So much can be riding on the outcome of your matter.
I understand that during this period you need someone who is readily available, understanding and empathetic, willing to work hard to achieve the best possible outcome for you as quickly and cost effectively as possible. I take a focussed, goal oriented approach, tirelessly doing my utmost to resolve your legal problems.
I am approachable. I listen. I work hard to assist parties to reach a compromise solution to get on with their life.
Whilst remaining open to fair and reasonable settlement proposals, if negotiation or mediation results in a stalemate and compromise seems unattainable, I fearlessly enter the fray. I am thorough, assertive, determined, resilient and persistent in pursuing your interests.
I isolate significant aspects of legal documents and explain in plain English the meaning and effect of obscure, complex and confusing legal jargon.
My involvement in the blue mountains community includes:
- Committee member of the Blue Mountains Regional Law Society;
- Member of the Blue Mountains Regional Business Chamber
- Member of the Lawson Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and
- Secretary of and volunteer for the Friends of the Mechanics Institute at Lawson (FOTMIL).
My rates are reasonable. Initial phone advice is free of charge and I charge charged at a substantially reduced fixed fee for face to face initial advice. I very seldom charge for reading incoming correspondence, for conducting research, and for making copies and do not charge for storage and retrieval of files and legal documents.
For deceased estates, family provision and certain family law property matters, if you are not in a position to pay my professional fees pending a settlement payout to you, I will consider, after discussing it with you, a request to defer payment of my professional fees until you receive a settlement payout.
I am also willing to assist people on an ad-hoc basis who have opted to represent themselves and to review proposed agreements drafted by clients using an online template.
For a modest fee, I will travel to your home, hospital or nursing facility and advise you in regards to, explain and witness documents such as your Will, Enduring Power of Attorney, Appointment of Enduring Guardian and Advance Care Directive.
I appreciate that it is difficult at the best of times to ask for time off work, let alone to see a lawyer. To help you to access much needed legal assistance, appointments on weekends and outside business hours are available on request.
If you have a legal problem in one of my areas of practice please contact me for a free consultation or to arrange an appointment at a time that suits you.
